Are you considering dental implants to restore your smile and improve oral health? At Pearlmax Oral Surgery in San Diego, Dr. German Trujillo and his team are here to guide you through the process and answer all your questions about dental implants. This FAQ article covers the essential steps involved in getting dental implants, helping you feel confident and prepared for your journey to a healthier, more beautiful smile.
Dental implants replace natural tooth roots made from biocompatible materials, usually titanium, inserted into your jawbone. They serve as a foundation for attaching replacement teeth. Implants are crafted to mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth, offering a long-lasting and visually appealing solution for replacing missing teeth.
Your path to getting dental implants begins with a consultation. During this appointment, Dr. Trujillowill will evaluate your oral health, discuss your goals, and decide if you are a good candidate for dental implants. We’ll take digital X-rays and 3D scans to assess the condition of your jawbone and plan the implant placement with precision.
The procedure is usually carried out under local anesthesia to keep you comfortable and pain-free throughout. It begins with a small incision in the gum tissue to reveal the jawbone. The dental implant is then meticulously positioned into the bone. After the implant is secured, the gum is stitched closed. A temporary restoration may be placed while the implant undergoes a healing period, during which it integrates with the jawbone over several months.
The healing process can vary depending on individual factors, but it generally takes 3 to 6 months for the implant to integrate with the jawbone fully. You must follow our post-operative care instructions during this period to ensure proper healing and avoid complications. Regular follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress and address any concerns.
Once the implant has successfully integrated with the jawbone, the next step is to attach the permanent restoration. This involves placing a small connector piece called an abutment on the implant. A custom-made restoration is then fitted and securely attached to the abutment. We’ll ensure that your new restoration matches the appearance and function of your natural teeth.
Most patients report minimal discomfort during and after the procedure. Local anesthesia ensures you’re comfortable during surgery, and any post-operative discomfort can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions to help you manage any swelling or soreness effectively.
